Now that you have decided to make a career in dogging and rigging, you need to know the basics. Well, this chapter is not about what you need to know when you take up dogging and rigging courses that are conducted by various institutes. This is all about taking a brief account of the industry sectors where you will need to apply that knowledge.
Frankly speaking, dogging and rigging involve quite a bit of risk, to say the least. As a result of which, you need to be professional in your approach and have a tough mental setup to carry out the job successfully. You need to be immaculate in your approach and robust and sturdy enough to withstand the rigours that you are expected to face while carrying out the dogging and rigging operations.
Now let us come to the point. Where on earth do you need these services? You need them mainly in 3 industry sectors, though there are other sectors as well. The three principal industry sectors include maritime, infrastructure and construction industry sector.
Maritime Industry
This industry needs experts in dogging and rigging for operations on board the vessels. The basic rigging operations are required for selecting and inspecting lifting gears and for directing the crane operations for moving loads on to the vessels from the docks and vice versa.
As per the Government of Australia rules, an expert who has successfully undergone intermediate rigging course in the Gold Coast area is eligible to get the MAR30116 certificate III for Maritime operations, in Integrated rating and MAR40116 Certificate IV in Maritime Rating. The skill set that has been stipulated by the Australian Government says that aspirants need to have a skill set of MARC029 for performing rigging on board a vessel and MARC032 for performing dogging.
Construction Industry
The construction industry needs the dogging and rigging more than any other industry. When we say the construction industry, it encompasses a number of sectors. They include bituminous surfacing, construction and maintenance of bridges, laying of pipes, construction, maintenance and marking of roads, timber bridge, and tunnel construction, and their maintenance, and various other types of civil construction.
As per the government rules, different types of license are needed in all these sub-sectors of the construction industry, for works that include comprehensive dogging and rigging.
Infrastructure and Mining Industry
This industry sector needs rigging and dogging as well, and the riggers and dogmen have distinctively defined roles to play. In this industry, rigging and dogging expertise that is provided by the rigging and dogging curriculum of Sunshine Coast institutes help the trainees to adhere to the slinging techniques for lifting or removing loads with the help of heavy-duty cranes.
It includes:
- Selecting the techniques of lifting after evaluating the nature of loads, the mass and the CG thereof
- Inspection of the lifting gear for evaluation of its condition and suitability
- Directing the operator for operating the crane and lifting or moving a load.
So riggers and doggers are expected to move and place or secure loads like parts of structures or buildings with the help of mechanical load shifting machines and equipment. They are also needed to set up or dismantle cranes as well as hoists.
Hence, dogging and rigging courses offered by these institutes always go a long way in helping the incumbents in building up their careers as per their aspirations in these and a few other sectors.
